Mariazeller-
land in summer
Hundreds of thousands make a pilgrimage to Mariazellerland in Upper Styria every year, especially to the heart of the region: the pilgrimage site of Mariazell, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe. The famous basilica impresses with its baroque architecture and reverent atmosphere. However, Mariazellerland is not only impressive for its cultural diversity, but also for its breathtaking natural scenery. Lake Erlaufsee, a crystal-clear mountain lake in the immediate vicinity of Mariazell, is a popular destination for swimmers, anglers and hikers. The surrounding mountains, such as the Gemeindealpe and the Bürgeralpe, offer hiking and mountain biking trails in summer. The Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park includes impressive waterfalls, extensive forests and gorges such as the Ötschergräben, also known as the “Grand Canyon of Austria”. A traditional product of the Mariazell region is gingerbread, which has been produced since the 17th century. You can taste the variety of this sweet specialty and learn more about how it is made in the so-called Lebzeltereien.
