Breathtaking snowy landscapes, fresh mountain air and delicious local delicacies
1. Free snowshoe tours organised by the Tourism Association
Is skiing not for you? This is no problem at all. I am not a fan of skiing, however, I absolutely love snowshoe hiking. The best place to book a tour is with the Wipptal Tourism Association. There are significant advantages to booking your tour this way: you do not have a pay a thing to hire your snowshoes and you will be accompanied by a very knowledgeable local mountain guide. When? Every Tuesday from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm. Pre-booking is essential.
2. Go winter hiking in the Gschnitz Valley
The Wipp Valley is divided into several tributary valleys including the Gschnitz Valley. A cross-country trail, which is approximately 18 kilometres long, and a narrower walking path which runs in parallel to the trail, both run along the length of the Gschnitz Valley. It takes approximately 2.5 hours to walk from Trins to Gschnitz. You will encounter a really special inn on this route which you should definitely make a point of visiting.
3. Stop off for a bite to eat at the Pumafalle snack bar
The Pumafalle is probably the only snack bar in the world that has received a one chef’s toque rating in the Gault Millau gastronomy guide. Chef Gabriele Gatscher cooks seasonal, regional and unbelievably good food. She sells home-made and locally-produced specialities, such as bread, venison sausages, honey, jam and herbal salt in the small shop that is joined to the snack bar.
4. Take part in an avalanche safety awareness course in Schmirn
An LVS park has been set up next door to the Olpererblick guest house in Schmirn. LVS is an abbreviation of the German term for ‘avalanche transceiver equipment’. The LVS search area in Schmirn has eight receivers. If you don’t have your own equipment, you can borrow an avalanche transceiver, a sensor and a shovel from the guest house.
5. Taste Kaspressknödelsuppe (beef broth with cheese dumplings) at the Gasthaus Olpererblick
As is the case at the Pumafalle snack bar, the chefs at the Gasthaus Olpererblick attach a great deal of importance to using locally-sourced ingredients. My personal favourite are Kaspressknödel (cheese dumplings) which I really love to eat with a home-made soup. The Schmirn Valley is well-known for its herds of Tyrolean highland cattle. This is why hearty dishes such as roast beef with onions and gravy, goulash, steak and braised beef are on the guest houses’ menus.
6. Go on a ski tour in the Wipp Valley
The Wipp Valley offers perfect conditions for ski tourers of all abilities. The 70 ski tours are described in detail. TheWipptal-Alpin Mountain Guide Office offers guided one-day tours. If you show your guest card, you will qualify for the discounted rate.
7. Walk up the Sattelbergalm mountain and whizz down on a toboggan.
The Sattelbergalm mountain is 1,637 metres above sea level and is a favourite destination for ski tourers, winter
hikers and snowshoe hikers. You can taste some of the most delicious home-made delicacies in the region on the mountain. I order Trisknödel (bacon and onion dumplings) and am served a Kaspressknödel (cheese) dumpling, a spinach dumpling and Schlutzkrapfen (a type of ravioli). After a cosy evening spent in the alpine cabin, you can borrow a toboggan and whizz down into the valley along the toboggan track. If this is not your thing, the hut taxi will take you down into the valley, or perhaps you could ask the innkeeper if there is a room available.
