Grünau im Almtal is one of the original 16 members of the Alpine Villages designated across Austria in 2008. But it’s not just mountaineers who feel right at home in the green idyll of Upper Austria. With our tour tips and guides, you’re well-equipped for every adventure. Due to its location at the head of the valley, Grünau offers many interesting via ferratas and alpine routes. Chief among them is the TASSILO via ferrata – Europe’s longest via ferrata. Over 1400m, you’ll have to overcome 600 meters in altitude. This includes challenging sections rated C and D. The Rotgschirr traverse is a simpler climbing passage with difficulties ranging from A to B, suitable even for climbing beginners. The ridge climbing offers breathtaking alpine views. The Temlberg, too, is more of a beginner’s route, although there’s a Grade D section to overcome.
The Mammoth Round opens up the climbing paradise between the Almtal and Hinterstoder. Three cozy huts and the three highest peaks of the Totes Gebirge await. This multi-day round is truly a mammoth task, combining various via ferratas. Intrigued?
The mountain is calling! Climbing getaway at JUFA Hotel Grünau im Almtal***. 2 or 3 nights and 3 tours. We have the perfect starting point. Shuttle service in the summer months to Almtalerhaus or Almsee included. Energy gel snack box is also provided, and current maps from the Alpine Club are available at the hotel. Via ferrata sets can be rented for a fee upon prior request at the Welser Hütte. And if the rain becomes too heavy, head to the climbing hall in Gmunden for dry training.
