Spittelberg Goes Green

In the narrow, winding streets of the historic Spittelberg district, a unique experience awaits you: contemporary craftsmanship meets traditional ambiance, and a wide array of culinary delights invites you to linger. Immerse yourself in the festive Advent atmosphere and let the vendors inspire you with their handmade treasures and delicacies. But that’s not all! This year, Spittelberg is making a strong statement for sustainability by presenting itself as an “Eco-Event.” This means a focus on environmental footprint, fair trade, local and regional products, and vegetarian and vegan options – all in the name of climate protection.
The Cradle of Styria
Pürgg Advent Market
Nestled at the foot of the Grimming mountain, the village of Pürgg invites visitors to its Advent market on the first two weekends of Advent. Far from the usual commercialism and kitsch, this market proudly retains its “traditional” label. While the small town of 144 residents remains quiet for most of the year, it comes to life during Advent, attracting many visitors who fall under its spell. It’s no wonder that the Austrian writer and poet Peter Rosegger gave Pürgg the nickname “Cradle of Styria.”
The transformation into a Christmas “cradle” bathes the village in a romantically idyllic light. Idyllic is indeed the perfect word to describe the atmosphere as you stroll through the market. Unlike typical Advent markets, you won’t find standard huts or stalls here. Instead, the exhibitors make use of what the village offers: barns, garages, sheds, and even the homes of the locals are transformed and festively decorated. Tradition plays a key role not only in the choice of venues but also in the crafts on display. The exhibitors, with great skill and patience, present traditional craftsmanship from the region, evoking memories of a bygone era.
This blend of tradition and reflection allows visitors to pause amidst the holiday rush and focus on what truly matters.
