Carnival parade in the Salzkammergut & Ausseerland
In the Salzkammergut and Ausseerland, carnival is the fifth season – and has been for over 100 years! Masked figures parade through the streets, accompanied by cheerful music and an exuberant atmosphere, making fun of the authorities and their fellow citizens.
Particularly spectacular: the “Flinserl”, magnificently decorated figures that drive away the winter with glitter and sparkle and are on the move in Ausseerland on Shrove Tuesday. In Ebensee, the “Fetzen” celebrate their parade on this day and show off their colorful rag robes, rag hats and wooden masks.
Incidentally, the carnival tradition in this region is so unique that UNESCO has recognized it as intangible cultural heritage.

The daffodil festival in Ausseerland is a fragrant spectacle and Austria’s largest flower festival! Not only the unique star daffodils bloom here, but also the imagination: artistic flower sculptures parade through the streets and later float majestically across the lakes. Celebrate what nature has to offer with music, traditional costumes and regional delicacies. A tip: get there early, because the best spots are as coveted as the flowers themselves!

Perchten runs in Pongau
In the time between the years, the gates between the world of humans and the world of spirits are said to be open … Between December 21 and January 6, mystical figures are also on the move in Salzburg’s Pongau region: witches, Schönperchten and the fearsome but all the more impressive Schiachperchten with their fur robes and horned masks. During the traditional Perchten processions, they lead the way from Christmas to carnival time and bring sun, light and fertility back to the land after the long winter.
